Farms and markets by state
Every state, counted from the RipeNearby directory: farmers markets, agritourism farms, farm stands and local-food listings of every kind, ranked by total and by listings per resident. Updated as the directory refreshes — figures below are as of October 2026.
Key findings — October 2026
- The directory tracks 33,112 local-food listings across 51 states, including 14,296 farmers markets and 13,445 agritourism farms.
- New York has the most listings of any state: 2,569.
- New York leads on farmers markets outright, with 1,489.
- Per resident, the local-food capital is Vermont: 73.9 listings per 100,000 residents, against a national rate of 10.
The table, all states
Sorted by total listings. “Per 100k” is all listings per 100,000 residents (2020 Census). A listing can carry more than one type, so type columns can sum past the total. Every state links to its own directory page.

Methodology
- What is counted. Public listings in the RipeNearby directory: farmers markets, agritourism farms (u-pick operations, hayrides, seasonal attractions), farm stands, CSAs and food hubs. A listing can carry more than one type — a farm that is both an agritourism operation and a farm stand counts in both type columns but once in the total.
- Where the data comes from. USDA Agricultural Marketing Service Local Food Directories and other public datasets, deduplicated and refreshed on a rolling schedule. Full detail, including the age of each source, is on the data sources page.
- Per-capita denominator. Resident population from the 2020 U.S. Census, so the rate is reproducible from a fixed public figure. The per-capita leader call-out is limited to states with at least 25 listings.
- What this is not. A census of every farm in America. These are the farms and markets in public directories — real coverage varies by state, and directory counts move as sources refresh.
